What Is CarPlay?
CarPlay is Apple’s latest mobile technology accessory designed to make using your iPhone safer in the car which is introduced at the Geneva International Motor Show. It is designed to give you constant access to Siri, Maps, your music, messages, and phone calls.
The list of cars compatible with CarPlay is growing, and for now it is limited for use with iPhone that include Lightning connectors (so you can use it and charge it at the same time) and iOS 7 or higher. The technology is designed to be voice-activated with Siri, but also rely on your car’s buttons, knobs, and a touchscreen interface.
How Does CarPlay Work?
If your vehicle and iPhone are compatible with CarPlay technology, you have three basic choices for getting the most of the accessory.
- Apple’s Siri – Use the voice assistance to make calls, answer calls, listen to your voicemail, access your contact lists, and follow other commands.
- Touchscreen – One of the highlighted features of CarPlay is the capability of it to interact with your car’s main touchscreen and give you access to your iPhone’s features on your dash.
- Knobs and Buttons – Some car manufacturers, such as Audi, rely on the more traditional knobs and buttons for controls, and CarPlay can utilize these.
Until Apple’s technology and the car manufacturing world get completely on the same production page, you’ll have to look around for compatible models. The Ferrari FF was the first commercially ready CarPlay supporting vehicle, but others such as Mercedes, Honda, and Volvo are joining the cutting edge.
