Launching this summer and making its way to Apple shelves in August the new FLIR One case for Apple iPhones brings picture taking to a whole new level with thermal imaging. The case with two cameras snaps to an iPhone – one camera an IR (infrared) version with a resolution of just 80×60 – and a second visible camera with 640×480 resolution. Together these cameras work to produce the thermal image.
Infrared light has a wavelength that our eyes can’t see. It reflects light and emits light, and the wavelength is dependent upon the temperature of what you are looking at. Different temperatures show up as different colors – the thermal imaging.
On the positive side, the One by FLIR comes with its own battery so it won’t drain your iPhone any more than other picture taking apps, but this means you will have another device to charge. Some users have complained that the One case is thicker and more awkward, but it can easily be removed and replaced with your standard case when not using the thermal imaging technology.
You’ll also need at least one of the free apps to work with the camera, but this can be half the fun as they allow you creativity options. Paint and Timelapse are just two of the options for getting creative with your thermal images. Contrary to popular childhood myths, however, the thermal imaging technology will not let you see through objects – yet.
