Read this articleRussia to Turn Sochi Into a Gambling Zone
It appears as if Russia has found a great way to keep attracting visitors to Sochi long after the Olympics have moved on – legalized gambling. The beautiful resort town next to the Black Sea will be designated as a gambling zone by the Russian government, which will ensure that all of the buildings that were constructed for the 2014 Winter Olympics will continue to be used.
Russia currently has a list of small zones where gambling is permitted, with all of them being far away from tourist areas and large cities, and now parliament has voted Sochi onto that list. Gambling zones were set up after the Russian government stormed across the country shutting down all of the casinos in 2009.
Many observers criticized Russia for spending $51 billion on the Olympic games, which gave them a total of 14 venues that could seat 145,000 people. Deputy Prime Minister Dimitry Kozak agreed that perhaps the government had overspent on Sochi saying, “We should do everything to make these projects bring returns on the investment, so that they don’t go bankrupt.”
Since the end of the Olympics there has been confusion surrounding what the buildings should be used for, with some being converted into sporting facilities or shopping malls. The new hotels that were constructed for the games are currently sitting mostly vacant, with many comparing Sochi to a ghost town.
