Read this articleIs Minecraft Safe with Microsoft?
In 2009 the Swedish firm Mojang introduced the world to Minecraft, and the rest is digital building history. Fast forward to September, 2014 and Microsoft just announced that it is purchasing Mojang and in turn this immensely popular app for $2.5 billion. Now, fans of Minecraft worry that platforms such as Apple iPhones and Xbox systems will be left in the dust, unable to continue a long line of progression with this open-world platform game.
Last year alone Minecraft brought in a profit of $100 million to Mojang and its only 40 employees, making it appear to be a wise investment for Microsoft. Up until now it has been one of the top selling apps for both Apple iOS and Android devices. Perhaps that is why fans of the game are so angered and see it as a corporate takeover that will have far-reaching effects. Users who take Minecraft videos and load them to YouTube, often earning them money, worry that new copyright laws might be brought by Microsoft to stop this trend. Others worry that they will start to be charged extra for game versions and updates on devices not supported by Microsoft.
However, Microsoft executives have said they will work to maintain Minecraft across Apple iOS, Android, and other gaming system platforms with a, “commitment to nurture and grow it long into the future.”
The founder of Mojang, Markus “Notch” Persson is counting on this attitude to come to fruition. He tried to calm fears of fans and said he hopes that fans continue to have the gaming experience they have always wanted. He personally “doesn’t want the responsibility of owning a company of such global significance.” The acquisition is set to be complete by the end of 2014, and only time will tell if all players will be able to continue building, exploring, and battling in the world of Minecraft.
