The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus were just released in China when word of attempted attacks on iCloud in that country began on October 21st. This particular type of attack is known as man-in-the-middle because the attack is aimed at intercepting personal information such as passwords, user names, and other details as this information is transmitted between users and the websites they are attempting to visit.
While some browsers block this type of malicious connection, others, especially those sometimes used in China, do not. Due to widespread internet censorship in that country there is speculation that the government may be behind the attacks as it attempts to gain information that will otherwise be heavily encrypted in the new iPhones.
The group Greatfire.org openly accuses the government of involvement, but Chinese officials deny these allegations, saying that “China is resolutely opposed to hacker attacks in all forms, and China itself is a major victim of cyber attacks.” Other governmental agencies around the world have criticized Apple for new encryption methods on recent Apple iDevices that make it much more difficult for there to be any access to digital information.
In response to the iCloud attacks in China, CEO Tim Cook met with officials in Beijing and the company released a statement in both Chinese in English saying “We’re aware of intermittent organized network attacks using insecure certificates to obtain user information, and we take this very seriously.” Apple went on to reassure users that iCloud is secure. The hacking attempts occurred only in China and Apple has since changed the associated IP address for iCloud.
