The awaited September 17th launch of the health-related apps on the new iOS 8 was met with disappointment as Apple announced a delay that same day due to a bug on the HealthKit platform. In anticipation of what Apple hoped would be hype over new iHealth capabilities and other health-related apps, HealthKit launched early to give app developers time to build health apps capable of working with HealthKit data. Somewhere in the HealthKit platform, however, a bug exists and that means that these new apps won’t be stepping forward for at least a couple of weeks as Apple works to solve the issue.
Apple has not yet released the nature of the HealthKit bug problem, but said that it hopes to find a resolution soon. Trudy Muller, Apple spokesperson, said, “We’re
working quickly to have the bug fixed in a software update and have HealthKit apps available by the end of the month.” The HealthKit feature for iOS 8 is an integral part of the Apple Watch device introduced September 9th and set to launch early in 2015.
Apple’s technology goal with HealthKit is to provide consumers options and opportunities to use apps in conjunction with their own hardware that collects data such as heart rate. Several health agencies and fitness companies plan to take advantage of the HealthKit possibilities, but will have to wait until it is “healthy” enough to launch after this bug delay.
