In a press release last week Apple announced that they will be recalling specific models of the iPhone USB adapter in Europe due to an elevated risk of overheating. Anyone who received the 5W European power adapter between October 2009 and September 2012 can trade it for a new one at any Apple Store.

The affected smart phones that have been identified are the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, and the iPhone 4s. The faulty adapters have the model number “A1300” which is found on the bottom of the charger, as well as the colours of the letters “CE”, (photo above).

In its official statement Apple commented, “Customer safety is always Apple’s top priority, and we have voluntarily decided to exchange every affected power adapter for a new, redesigned adapter, free of charge. We encourage customers to exchange any affected adapter for a new one as soon as possible.”

Owners who wish to exchange their charger must also bring their iPhones with them to the Apple Store so the serial number on the phone can be recorded. Apple will continue to accept exchanges on 3rd party chargers for a discount on real Apple charges; this was started after two deaths and numerous injuries that were attributed to the knockoff chargers.

The list of countries where the faulty iPhone charger was sold is below:
