Apple Pay, the new service that is hailed as a the future of the digital wallet, launched Monday, October 20th and almost immediately showed signs of glitches that could make or break this mobile payments system. Reports have surfaced of double charges for in store purchases where consumers used their Apple iPhone 6 or 6 Plus devices enabled with NFC chips to make purchases, and then later realized their accounts were charged twice.
The Apple Pay double billing, however, is not apparently because of an Apple glitch. The consumers who have experienced the billing errors all have one thing in common – they use Bank of America. The commonality appears to be a technology issue on the part of the banking system, and representatives say that their technicians are working to quickly resolve the issue. In the meantime, Bank of America spokeswoman Tara Burke said, “All duplicates will be refunded, we apologize for the inconvenience and are correcting this immediately.”
With the holiday season just around the corner, retailers and Apple are both hoping that from here on out there is smooth sailing for the Apple Pay system. Even with these initial glitches, Apple feels that, “Apple Pay is off to an amazing start and customer are loving the easy, secure and private way to pay.”
