Apple shocked environmentalists yesterday when they announced that all of their 420 global stores will now accept any of their used products and recycle them for free. They had already been giving customers Apple gift cards for old iPods and iPhones that were still in decent enough condition to be resold.
The announcement coincided with Earth Day to piggyback on the media exposure and show that Apple are now recommitted to reducing their carbon footprint, and will be doing their part to better the environment. For years countries all over the world have been mistakenly dumping many different types of electronics into landfills, which are now releasing toxins into the soil and contaminating the earth around them. Apple alone has sold over 421 million pounds of computers, phones, laptops and gadgets since 1994.
This new policy from Apple affirms the report that Greenpeace recently issued which reviewed the technology industry and labelled Apple as, “the most innovative and most aggressive in pursuing its commitment to be 100% renewable powered,” when it was assessing the most environmentally responsible companies in business today.
Thinking green is nothing new for Apple – all four of their U.S. data centers are already powered by 100% renewable energy such as solar, wind, hydro power, and bio gas. In addition, 94% of the energy in their offices comes from renewable sources, which is an increase from 35% only four years ago.
Apple has also launched numerous recycling programs in cities and college campuses all over the world, as well as reducing the average total power consumed by their products by 57% since 2008.
