The Find My iPhone app not only helps to recover lost or stolen pieces of technology, but it can also help to bring happy endings for children. This was the case recently when the app, along with diligence from a local police department, helped to reunite a young boy who has Autism with his iPad – an important tool in his life. Even though the title of the app is says iPhone, it actually works with the iPad as well.
For 4th-grader Joshua Wortham of Alabama, the iPad is more than a fun way to play games or listen to music. He uses his iPad as a daily journal, a keepsake for his favorite artwork, a storage center for his photography, and his engineering inspiration and designs. When his iPad was stolen from the seat of his family’s vehicle, right in his own driveway, he worried about a stranger suddenly having access to his journal, and about all of the valuable resources he stored on the device.
Joshua’s family reported the theft to their local police department. They also immediately turned on the Find My iPhone app that the family installed after first purchasing the device and activated the “lock” option so that when the there was any attempt to use the device the family would be notified. Joshua’s family received an Apple email soon afterward with a GPS coordinate, but police could not located the device.
After weeks of missing his iPad, Joshua’s family received another Apple email notification – but this time the GPS coordinates were enough to lead police to the iPad and bring some relief to Joshua. Afterward Joshua wrote thank you notes to the police department and even baked them some cookies – there is no app for that kind of happy ending.
