A complaint was filed in U.S. District Court in Nevada last week by ex-partner of the Las Vegas Sands, Marshall Hao. The suit alleges that the Sands misappropriated trade secrets and now owes the Asian American company at least $5 billion due to their casino license and copyright which is co-owned.
The Asian American company is going against a formidable opponent in Sheldon Adelson, the CEO of the Las Vegas Sands, who is one of the United State’s richest men, and has donated millions to Republican candidates’ election campaigns. It all started in 2002 when Adelson and Asian American put in a joint bid for a gaming licence in Macau, but then Adelson dumped AA for Galaxy Entertainment.
The team of Galaxy-Sands eventually won a license beating out many serious challengers such as MGM-Grand and Macau Star. The lawsuit from Asian American claims that the Sands simply re-submitted the same bid that they had with Adelson, but with their new partner, Galaxy.
Asian American’s complaint states that, “This is an action for money damages arising out of profits owed to plaintiff by LVSC for use and benefit of the work which ultimately led to the Las Vegas Sands enterprise securing a Macau concessions contract.”
If previous judgements are any indication of how this case will turn out, Adelson won’t be happy. The Las Vegas Sands has already had to pay out $70 million to Richard Suen in 2013 after he took them to court alleging that they did not follow through on a promise to compensate him for “easing the process” in getting a gaming license in Macau.
A few other issues involving the Sands are a lawsuit with Steven Jacobs for wrongful termination, and investigations by both the Securities and Exchange Commission and the United States Department of Justice to determine if the Sands violated U.S. anti-corruption laws.
