Read this articleTim Cook Opens Up About Sexuality
Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple, Inc., took a step forward on October 30th and opened up to the world about his sexuality. In an Opening Remarks column for Bloomberg Businessweek Cook discusses privacy, public speculation, and his ultimate decision to once and for all tell the world that he is gay – and proud of it as he considers it “among the greatest gifts God has given” to him.
In his candid bio piece, Cook discusses how he hasn’t necessarily been trying to hide his sexuality, but that he realized opening up about his personal life might be able to positively influence others and perhaps even the discussion about gay rights.
Apple is a presence the world over, and not all countries are embracing Cook’s openness. The Russian government is vocal about its intolerance of homosexuality, and Vitaly Milonov, a member of Russian parliament, called for Russia to “ban him [Cook] for life.”
As the CEO of one of the most popular and powerful businesses in the world, Tim Cook said that if his public acknowledgement of his sexuality “can help someone struggling to come to terms with who he or she is, or bring comfort to anyone who feels alone, or inspire people to insist on their equality, then it’s worth the trade-off with my own privacy.” He also shared his appreciation for the environment at Apple, where he feels fortunate to work with a company that advocates for equality and encourages individuals to flourish.
