The Future of the Flexible Phone
Recent patents show that Apple is at least considering the development of a flexible iPhone. Tuesday, January 6th, the US Patent and Trademark Office awarded a patent for “flexible electronic devices”. These devices are described as having flexible components both in the exterior and interior, making the possibilities rather enticing for those who cram their phones into nooks and crannies.
The inner workings of a flexible iPhone would mean everything from the circuit boards to the batteries would need an overhaul from current models. The screen and external components would also need to withstand the pressure of flexibility.
Apple appears to be looking at durability with the application of the flexible phone patent. Within the patent application Apple says that, “Flexible electronic devices may be more resistant to damage during impact events, such as drops, because the flexible device may bend or deform while absorbing the impact.”
Before you get extremely excited about a flexible (and perhaps more durable) iPhone, remember that a patent is far from production. Apple files for thousands of patents, and the majority of them never come to fruition. However, since competitors are also looking at revolutionizing smartphones, perhaps Apple will place extra emphasis on making this patent come to reality. At best we’ll have to wait years before we can squeeze our iPhones to open iTunes, but it’s a nice thought to imagine an oversized iPhone 6 Plus bending in our back pocket.
