The Stylus Steve Jobs Didn’t Want
While many Apple advancements speak to the vision and innovation of Steve Jobs, adding a stylus to the Apple brand line is not one of them. In 2007 he memorably asked the audience at the Macworld Conference:
Who wants a stylus? You have to get ‘em, put ‘em away, you lose ‘em, yuck. Nobody wants a stylus.
Well, apparently some people do because Apple recently secured a new patent, U.S. Patent No. 8,922,530, for smart pen technology. The patent application has been on hold for almost 5 years, but now Apple is moving forward with the design.
The New Apple Stylus
Within the pages of the patent application Apple describes the technology as:
The stylus tracks its different positions while a user is writing or drawing and then either stores the data to be uploaded later or transmits the data simultaneously to a computing device. The computing device then displays the images and text drawn on the surface.
Other clues in the patent application hint at a much more sophisticated stylus than we have seen so far. The device will be able to translate handwriting digitally, including text and drawings, and will have storage capacity within the device itself.
The applications for advanced styluses are varied, including classrooms and boardrooms, but the question of powering such a device still remains to be seen. For now, stylus and technology fans await the potential that could be unleashed with a new, digital pen by Apple.
