Late last week Chinese state media reported that the iPhone is a threat to national security due to its capability to keep track of users’ locations, as well as time stamp when they are in certain places. The iPhone’s “Frequent Locations” function was slammed by broadcaster CCTV, and lambasted owners for allowing themselves to be tracked in such a manner.
An “expert” was interviewed during the telecast claiming that if the data of Chinese citizens were compromised and accessed by a 3rd party, it would be able to know the country’s economic status, as well as state secrets. “This is extremely sensitive data,” he warned.
The Chinese state media has taken shots at Apple Inc. before, accusing the company of leaking data to the United States in an effort to compromise the security of the People’s Republic of China. Strangely, one of their other main complaints about Apple is their customer service.
Besides iPhones, the Chinese government has taken issue with many other American companies such as Google Inc, Microsoft, Cisco and IBM. Most of these issues arose after Edward Snowden released many damning reports detailing how the United States government spies on most people throughout the world.
Apple has yet to comment on the accusation that they are tracking Chinese citizens, or the allegations that their customer service is terrible.
